Battery Options: Why not cell phone batteries?

Post by NitzerSmeg » Mon Jun 26, 2017 12:10 pm

I'm working on my first GBZ build, and I'm trying to plan for power. I see plenty of suggestions for stand alone battery options, like those from Adafruit, but never for cell phone batteries.
Is there an issue with charging? Size? Wouldn't the built in circuitry be a useful addition?

There are indeed builds that use cell phone batteries. I used a 4800mAh Samsung battery that fits nice in a GB she'll with little modification. Check the link in my sig. If you look through the forum, you will see others.

Oh man, that setup with the pogo pins was exactly what I was considering. Glad to know this is an option!

Also, your LCD bracket is awesome! Thanks for putting that out there!

Here's another build that uses a cell battery: viewtopic.php?f=8&t=2953

There's no real reason to avoid them - they work fine and are a nice, clean solution - but they tend to be more expensive in terms of $/mAh, and you're somewhat limited in size.

pogo pins are neat, but fiddly because of their length. if you can get the actual type of contacts used in cell phones then that's a win. I posted a link to someone's build and I keep getting ads in my browser for them but not right this second. I'll come back with a link or a part number.
edit: and as if by magic it came up. search for: Bourns 70AAJ-4-M0

also the other thing to consider is that a lot of newer cell batteries are rated at 3.8/4.35V which is higher than the usual 3.7/4.2v of typical adafruit etc. Lipo's
This isn't a problem using a powerboost charger etc, but you won't be charging it to it's full capacity, so a 4800mAh battery may end up having a real life capacity nearer 4500. but the upside is increased battery lifetime

That is excellent information. I was wondering about those numbers on the newer batteries. Thanks!
