LP OuijaPi

Post by Lphillimore » Tue Nov 14, 2017 9:19 am

So given i've now made a fair few mintyPis i'm finally getting around to using something other than an Altoids tin.

Early stages of this one but have gone for the Ouija tin which, as it happens are available here in Australia....Unfortunately only in boxes of 18!

My tins are the off white variety. I've seen the bright white version which i really like but this is all i have to work with.

I've also landed myself a 3D printer which, for $300 Aus is really impressing me. Its not perfect, but I've learnt a lot in a few weeks and I'm now running some half decent prints :D - Thanks as ever to the guys creating these for us all to use.

Going to be using Helders latest PCB and screen for this, too.

Here's the base kit:

Did a quick search while scoping parts and found some black membranes which will look nice through the natural print.

Initial concerns with this one are the black tin base and drilling the holes. The slightest mistake and the tin's ruined. Being very careful you drill perfect holes but naturally you expose the aluminium on the inside of the hole which is visible from certain angles. A black sharpie fixes that up nicely!

Still working on the charge port filing (taking it slowly!) but getting there.

Here's a few pics to date with more to follow:

Very nice holes !
Do you have a special technique ? Gonna start a MintyPi and the tin drilling is the only part scaring me

Thanks!

Not really, just to increment the drill bit starting with half mm manual pilot hole in my case. Prevent that aluminium tearing up :D

The better holes you drill the kess filing required 😎

Had to re-run my faceplate print as some residual black PLA was on nozzle and has infected my print :D

You can see small black marks on it from my image. Not perfect, not happy!

Have since finished my filing and I'm pretty happy with it. Pics to follow.

Just waiting on some more Pi so I can push on 8-)

I knew it! Your 3d printed parts were possessed by a demon. Precisely the reason why I don't like the Ouija theme.

Exorcise the demons!

More batteries have now arrived and I've finished the filing. Really liking how this one is going to look

Finally got around to finishing this one off :D

Been a busy few weeks sorting out for my trip back to UK for Christmas....

Decided to go against the new internal layout and stick with my function button on the left of the tin. This meant I placed my soundcard in the original position at the back of the tin between the trigger tactiles.

Haven't yet had time to re-print the screwless screen faceplate to fix up that very small black flaw in the print....

Will do it in the new year...will also swap the D-Pad button with a wonky print on it. :geek:

Really happy with how this one came out...had to be extra careful handling this tin as the black can be scratched really easily. A few micro blemishes can be hidden with a decent permanent black marker however... 8-)

This is actually the first mintyPi I've built that uses Helders new v2 PCB. Excellent work as ever. The extra pads for the function button, audio and not to mention the built in battery monitor really make this PCB easy to work with. I didn't actually use the ground pad for the Button as it would have meant running another wire across the tin as my button is on the opposite side. Like previous builds I hooked into a tactile GND which I linked back to the charge module.

Hope you like it guys.

Thanks to Rodocop for the inspiration for this build.

Merry Christmas :P

Beautiful build! What color filament did you use, white or natural? Looks really nice.
