Thanks a bunch, will try this. One more question, did you still have to put tiny cut pieces of glue inside your buttons to prop them up, or does adding these screws eliminate the need for that? I can't seem to cut the glue perfectly straight so the buttons are kinda angled.
No they're still required! I didn't use the gluestick method, its near impossible to cut these correctly.

In one of my builds I used 3D printed discs. In the other, I dremeld a wooden dowel to a disc and used sandpaper to make it even thinner. I'd also advice you to put some layers of tape under the dpad to shorten the distance there as well.
I used to be an adventurer like you, but then I took an arrow in the knee :-O

Have you tried taking a hole punch to a credit/gift card (or something of similar thickness, even VHB tape) this will give you uniform thickness and also give you a perfect circle.

@Fredl or anyone who has built both the 1UP kit and a Kite SAIO kit:

How is the button feel compare between the two kits? For now I've put a plastic washer under the buttons and added those screws and that seems to help a ton. But I can tell it's still not perfect.

Obviously button feel is extremely important for a gaming system. On Kite's SAIO how is the button feel on the completed project?

While I haven't built the Kite kit, what I read from the new Circuit Sword. you have to buy the button pads yourself. Since the two boards lie in the same distance from the front shell, I'd say the button feel should be the same, unless you buy some super high quality button pads...

The circuit sword seems super interesting though. Maybe I'll spend some $$$ there
