When I was researching RetroPie I found out about Lakka which is supposed to load much faster because it is stripped down (less emulators). I'm only planning on GB, GBC, maybe GBA, Game Gear, Genesis, NES and SNES. Doubtful I will do any MAME, and if I did it wouldn't be anything hardcore. NEO-GEO max. I watched that awesome load video with all the different emulators and started to worry that is reflective of how long startup will take.
Has anyone used Lakka with Pi 0? Is the load time of RetroPie terribly long?
Anyone use Lakka?

I have briefly played with it. It's quicker loading for sure, and has a PS3 style interface. The system loads read only so in theory you can just switch off when your done without damaging the SD card

Re: Anyone use Lakka?
Lakka is different to RetroPie. Retropie is a normal Debian (Raspbianlinux) with installed Emulation Station etc... Lakka is a down stripped linux. Raspbian has many startup services some slowdowns at the boot with network and sometimes filesystems.
I tested (very short) Lakka on a zero, no problems.

i think the core system files are read only, but you can still access some files for games and such

Code: Select all
Built on LibreELEC
Lakka is based on LibreELEC, which provides a number of advantages:
A 300mb read-only filesystem you cannot break even with root access.

I keep meaning to try and get an spi screen working on it. Do you still need a serial cable to be able to get a terminal to get WiFi working?
