Sirlias's First Build (SNES)

Post by Sirlias » Thu May 18, 2017 11:49 am

So this is my first attempt at a pi build. I built it into an SNES controller much like PRS-TECH's build but with a few changes.

This is the finished piece.

Here you can see the HDMI port and the on/off switch.

And the all important charging usb.

Unfortunately I didn't take any pictures during the build but you can see I used a pi-zero (which I quickly wished I had used a pi-zero-w because the built in WiFi is so much more convenient), a powerboost 500, and a micro to standard hdmi converter that I took apart and squeezed (barely) into the case, there are also two 500 mAh batteries in there connected in parallel.

Here you can see the corner of the second battery poking out from under the pi.

An attempt at a closer look.

The case modifications were pretty minor. Here you can see I removed the six plastic columns that held the PCB down, other pictures show the side cuts I made for the ports, if you look closely you can also see that I had to trim off some of the bulk around the screw posts so the whole thing would close.

All in all I'm pretty proud of this build. This is actually my second rendition (I didn't take any pictures of the first but it only had one battery and used an actual SNES controller instead of the aftermarket controller). I haven't tested it yet but I should be able to get about 4 hours of playtime now that I've added the second battery. The whole thing fits nice and snug in there and aside from a little hiccough in the fact that the down button only works if you press in the middle or slightly left (slightly right and it doesn't register for some reason and everything is glued down so I'm not sure I'll be able to fix it without taking the whole thing apart...again) it works like a charm.

Thanks to everyone around here that inspired me to give this a try!

Why have you gone with a battery?
Because it still needs to be plugged into a tv wouldn't it be easier to have external power either through a mains plug or USB from tv?

Sorry forgot to add, it is good though!!

Mainly because I don't like the look of multiple cords. I also wasn't a fan of needing both an open hdmi and an open usb port in order to play. I know PRS-Tech had power through the hdmi on his build but again, I'm not a fan of needing two open ports in order to play.

You can plug in the charging port and the hdmi port simultaneously and play without the battery though.

Mostly I just really liked a self contained unit. I rarely ever have more than 4 hours at a time to play anyway so this build works for my needs.

Nice work! Those batteries are tiny. Where did you get them?

Thanks I got them from adafruit. They are the 500 MAh batteries. I used 2 in my build but I originally had it working with just 1 and got about 2 hours out of it.
