How long is the distance between the screen and the bezel? You could cut some Acrylic and make a screen cover. Heck, you could probably use a transparency sheet if space is that much of a premium. I suggest making a list of parts that you want, costs and lead time. Parts from china are cheaper but take way longer to receive. I'd start with a case so you can get things mounted and test along the way.

Not sure if it's relevant but adafruit has hdmi breakout boards.. looks a bit beyond my knowledge though.

I couldn't tell a difference with or without it in my builds. I'd say try without, if you're not happy with the quality, then add one.

As for a beginner I'd recommend waiting for an AIO to come available.

I bought a cheaper amp from amazon. Looks identical to the adafruit but the board is purple. Turns out, it does say "adafruit!" On the back.
