Yes, I just got some progress on it this morning. So, what I did was I used ssh to login to the pi and updated the operating system. Good news! Well, after troubleshooting and troubleshooting my headphone setup I'm now in this camp. My card gets the same error. Actually, both cards I have get the same error. I'm going to see if I can figure out why this error is showing up as well as if I can find a software workaround. Update: I found that...

Still no luck on getting it working. I'm starting to think the board is dead or potentially a software issue. I could get dead white noise on the headphones but no real sound. Yes, you should be able to spray paint your 3D printed parts. Krylon makes a nice set of spray paints for plastics that I've been using with good results to paint my 3D parts.
