Thanks to your help I now have stereo sound through the mono amp. Unfortunately now I have more interference than before. Is there any thing I can do to reduce the hiss and crackle? Maybe insulate the wires? I thought copper tape with an electrical tape covering?

For the sound no need for weird configuration, just short the left and right wire on the input of your amplifier Won't this still only give me the left channel as there's no right channel output from the Pi? Or do you mean get stereo output from the Pi and connect the left and right wires at the amp?
