Have you tried the composite output on another display? Your TV maybe? If that flickers also, it could rule out the display.

I personally wouldn't paint or lacquer my gameboy. The coating is likely to come off on your hands through use. It's also easier to clean bare plastic than it is to repair damaged clearcoat.

Yes, leave the first line as keys[0] as this is the first index of the "keys" array, not the pin marked 0.
