If it’s for Raspberry Pi then you can just initialize the lcd via spi like what the Pimoroni Hyperpixel is doing.

Start with a Pi zero. Buy one and a cheap usb controller or a usb keyboard will do for now. Format your sdcard and install RetroPie. Now connect the Raspberry Pi to an hdmi tv or monitor. Won't work for too long, the built in MCU that initializes the screen will be removed going on in the latest batches. An MCU will be needed to make it work if you get the newer ones.

Another way to test is use a tactile switch on a button that makes the stutter issue. Just solder the other pin of the tactile switch to the GPIO that corresponds to the button and solder the other pin to any GND.

Im not 100% sure but i think it has also something to do with debouncing on the retrogame software.
