After a successful build of the VMU, I ran a retropie update and now it just stops after boot waiting for login. The only additional thing I did that might affect this is that I also changed root password (passwd). I did change it back to default but still the same issue. Any ideas...?

Fair enough. I still think that a build video would be nice, especially since there are several mods needed for the case and adding shoulder buttons makes it even more challenging.

How long is the distance between the screen and the bezel? You could cut some Acrylic and make a screen cover. Heck, you could probably use a transparency sheet if space is that much of a premium.
