i was thinking use the same button layout as a 3ds so people who like the dpad can use that but people who like the analog for people who want to use that

What about (a working) touchscreen or even (ds/dsi/3ds) dual screen support.
A MintyPi with two screens would be freakin' cuwl 👍

not entirely sure there's enough oomph in the GPU for a usable second screen. MAYBEEEE for a second info screen, but probably not a Usable DS second screen. also I don't think DS emulation is that viable on a Pi. maybe in vertical orientation...

actually, I've been doing some investigation and it seems Pi3 emulates DS fairly well with various options for the orientation of the screens. but not as far as i can tell over 2 actual screens. mainly side by side etc

Perhaps make use of one of those "stick PC's" that are made to plug into TV's?
