Force Mono Audio for Adafruit I2S Amp?

Post by obsidianspider » Sat Mar 24, 2018 8:50 am

I'm working on setting up theAdafruit I2S amp and from what I can tell, it seems to work.

In the instructions it mentions
At this time, Jessie Raspbery Pi kernel does not support mono audio out of the I2S interface, you can only play stereo, so any mono audio files may need conversion to stereo!
What do I need to do to tell Raspbian/RetroPie to use mono over I2S? The only references to mono I've been able to find are related to using PWM audio.

You can combine both outputs with some resistors just like in the PWM guides.

The device itself is only mono. Seems to work with NES games that I've tested with, so I'm probably ok.

That adafruit I2s amp already combines the signals for you. I think it is just saying that it can't split it back to mono only, which really shouldn't make a difference for retropie usage.

Ah, ok, their documentation wasn't clear on that. I didn't really do a ton of testing to try to see if sound from distinct channels was coming out. Good to know it's not a problem.
