max98357a wont interface with pi zero 1.3

im trying to use a max98357a with wermy's v4 image and i uncommented the line in config.txt to enable i2s and when i restart it doesent work. also if i check sound settings its at 1% and when i change it to 100 and exit that menu it just goes back to 1%. i dont know what piece of the puzzle im missing on this one
