Just thinking about the positioning of the left joystick and D-pad. What systems do you plan on playing mostly? Most retrogames only support the D-pad. Even for the PS1, there are just a few games that use the joysticks. I would put what you think would be used more in the top circular area of the left side.

Anyway, this is a cool project. Can wait to see the build.
Thanks for the input! I modeled the locations of the controls identically mainly for aesthetics, but also so I could move and replace the controls easily. That being said, the D-Pad and Analog stick are located based on my own foam mock-ups and ergonomic testing and they are equally easy to access. We'll see what it's like in the 3D print, but I'm confident... the shoulder buttons on the other hand...

To answer your question, I built this off the OPi PC because I wanted to make use of its power to play N64 games like Jet Force Gemini (and mouse-based MS-DOS like King's Quest if possible). Sure I'll have Snes, Genesis, Gameboy etc, but it's largely an experiment to see how far I can push it...and as a design exercise for myself.

Alright, I got my 3D printer up and running and managed to shoot out a couple trial runs in PLA. I ran into an issue and then promptly broke my hotend nozzle, so I won't be able to update until this weekend. Regardless I was able to test my model and found the sockets I made for my stereo speakers were a touch too small. I reworked them and also reduced the speaker vents.

A few other tweaks and I think the front shell is finalized. The control placement feels good and will feel better with the bulk of the back shell in place.

I also butchered a falsely advertised USB charger and managed to get it to run the OPi PC. Capacity is far too low and I think I'll still need to boost it for more demanding emulators but it booted!

Since I'm waiting on a new hotend for my printer, I decided to pretty up my CAD just for fun.

Still have to tweak the back shell a bit and add ports for headphones, hdmi out, battery charging, USB inputs, and possibly ethernet (if I decide not to desolder it from the OPi PC. Then comes the final screw posts and positioning!

Top that off with the Stormtrooper theme for ES and you'd have a beautiful finished product

Thanks all! I whipped up a little splash screen for presentation purposes, but I might end up using it to replace the godawful standard Retrorange Pi one. I think I'll want to make my own lineart drawings of consoles in place of the images however.

Printer is up and running, so I should be able to test the component fit and get on with the electronics this week!

what you're looking for to embed the youtube vid is to take the video code (the bit after the /emebd/ so "moq5k_BXOsw" in this case) and wrap it in {youtube} tags like:

Code: Select all

giving you this:
