GB Zero SP ABXY

Post by zwenjamin » Sun Feb 18, 2018 9:39 am

I'm currently building a GB Zero SP with additional XY buttons. I built a "normal" GB Zero some time ago and now am up to a bit more trickier challenge :).

So far, these are the parts I am going to use:
  • Raspberry Pi Zero
  • GB Shell (+Hinges)
  • ILI9341 2.8" Display
  • 4 Port USB Hub
  • External USB card
  • Li-Ion Batter Charger
I started with the physical mods to integrate the additional XY buttons:

I designed and 3D printed a bigger well to include all buttons. Still needs painting and some finishing touches, but I generally like it. If anyone is interested, I can share the .stl for the well / buttons.

Next step is to trim down the display (the PCB is a tiny bit too wide) and fit it into the top part.

The game boy SP project is an "other project" as the GBZ show off corner is for Game Boys a la Wermy style :D

really.....

IMHO, anything with Gameboy in its name or title should go under the Gameboy Zero section....
(GB DMG, GBC, GBP, GBA, GB SP)

theres Gameboy with Pi3 in a section called "Zero" (which a la Wermy style aren't made with a Pi Zero)
(and now with CM3 boards, that cant be calling themselfs "Zero" either)

this build is gonna be more of a Gameboy Zero, than any Pi3 or CM3 build (because its a Gameboy with a Pi Zero)

anything else i feel needs to go in the Other Project section, but a Gameboy in whichever version should be in the Gameboy Zero section
(as there are different Gameboy builds in there already, just makes sense)
(besides it also makes it easier to search for such builds)

Just my humble opinion....

I love your button layout. This is the one reason I never wanted to do a gameboy advance or an "SP" build, and this button solution would make both a plasant building experiance. Thank you for thinking of this! Please make this avalible for other porjects, the community needs great stuff like this! Keep up the good work.

Looks great!! The button layout is kind of backwards though - Nintendo consoles do A & B on bottom and X & Y on top. Unless it was intentional?
I've just finished my milk.

Is there a current thread with a Gameboy Pi Zero build in a Gameboy Color shell?
