Fastest, Cleanest GB Screen Cutout (5 seconds)

Post by HoolyHoo » Fri Mar 31, 2017 7:49 am

For those that have access to a table router and 3D printer, this is the fastest and cleanest way that I found to cut out the opening of your GB case without the need of a hand rotary tool which can be a pain and is super hard to get a clean straight cut.

You first start by printing out this print.

Use a table router with a 1/4 inch flush cutting bit. Make sure bit has a guide bearing like the ones used to trim laminate counter tops. Adjust the height of the bit so the bearing rides along the 3D template.

Then its just a matter of double sticking the template to the case and follow the pattern.

If all went well, then in literally, 5 seconds you should have this nice straight perfect cut.

Here are the files. I have included the router template for the screen opening and also a negative of that one which I didn't show in photos but if you print it and double stick it to a 1mm acrylic sheet, you can cut out screen protectors perfectly in a flash.

Amazing!! :D all these 3D printed bits I might need to get a 3D printer :)
DO IT! DO IT!
get a prusia i3 clone. ~£250. done I'll get some recommendations from the hackspace for good and cheap ones if you want? (the space uses lulzbot mini and taz's which are good, but not cheap by any means...)

or do you have a maker/hackerspace near you (what city do you live in/near?)

Well i3 is open source so clones are no less real than a 'real' i3 ;)
If you want any parts 3D printed or laser cut just give me a shout. I can do both for certainly cheaper than most on-demand services

Shame there isn't a PCB printer, that would be right up my street :P
not a printer but you can engrave them with a 2D cnc engraver or mill

I had to wait around 10 years from first discovering them to one being formed near me... Next nearest is 60 miles (95 km) away...

What a good idea. I had another idea. Maybe someone owns an CNC millimg maschine: this persone could do us a milling service? Maybe I should link this to my facebook CNC group... I don't own one of these maschines...

There is still room for improvement, but for 1st cut I think it's not bad.

There's some decent ones for like 500. But making a jig and getting the cams is the hard part. I was planning to look for someone who could do it, then you could pop out fully cut cases in minutes. I thought about making them and selling em on amazon or etsy.
