Dual colored faceplate for mintyPi

Hi all,

Not sure if anyone has experimented with this yet. When 3d printing my faceplate I had 2 things nagging me:
  • the pi logo was really cool but hard to see
  • I didn't have a dark red/purple color that matched the cinnamon flavored altoids tin
So, I tried to solve both problems with a multi-colored print! I layered black filament underneath red to darken it and give contrast to the pi logo for the cinnamon tin, and layered white underneath the red to really give the logo some pop and keep everything bright for the peppermint tin:

I also smoothed out everything using sandpaper (220 moving up to 2,000) and brasso polish. I printed this on a prusa i3 mk2, using Slic3r PE and a prusa app called ColorPrint that allows you to change filament mid-print. Using .20 mm layer heights I ordered the color change at the 3rd layer, 0.60 mm. Hope you like it!

i especially like the red/white combo. I was planning on filling in the pi recess with some other colour... I think I know what colour it'll be now ;)

the files will be specific to his printer.
they are just the regular mintypi STL's but had gcode generated for his printer to be able to do dual colour extrusion. unless you have EXACTLY the same printer (and by that I mean his ACTUAL printer, or built it at the same time with identical parts and flashed with the same firmware) the the gcode file will be wrong for your printer.

Glad you like it! I have a nice blue filament for the wintergreen tin, I'm going to try white first, then bright green for the underside and see what works better.

The .stl files are the exact same as what wermy uploaded in his guide. All I did was add a change filament command to the .gcode file at the 3rd layer using Prusa ColorPrint app. I can upload the .gcode if you'd like, but I'm not sure if it'll work on any printer that's not a Prusa i3...

Finally, I got it printed I did use an Exacto knife to trim some edges (that's why dome edges are uneven).
Do not know why the photo is upside down.
