Right! Ideally you described it all, that was it!

Hi,
I have just installed the pre-made image.
The Pi starts normally, and installs everything.
I have a game pad and a keyboard connected via a USB hub.
The keyboard works, the SNES USB controller does not.
I also get no message that a gamepad is being detected!
I always get only a black screen, no matter what setting I choose.
Can I dont test the Pi without having assembled it?

Wondering how long it takes others to build a mintyPi.

I somehow got away with an 8 hour marathon session and created my second build, from start to finish.

Damn 8 hours? I built 2 in around 3 or so hours.

Yeah, keep in mind my electronic building experience is only 4 months old.

I think I'm doing a decent job:

My 15 year old son has been bothering me for a while about building one of these MintyPi games. I don't know electronics real well, but I am an electrician. Where can I order all the needed parts for him as a gift? Also do you think we can put it all together ourselves? He's good with the software stuff if that helps at all. He is in computer shop at his vocational school.

Take a look at the wiki, it has links to where you can buy things and if you don't see a link, you can use google to find them. http://www.sudomod.com/wiki/index.php?title=MintyPi

Yes, you can build it yourself!

Does anyone know if I can use the old pcb with the new screen? I have an old button pcb and everything wired up to it and I was wondering if you could connect it to the new screen.

Not with the screen connected to the new LCD backboard. The new LCD backboard uses a 10 pin ribbon cable and the old pcb uses a 8 pin ribbon cable.
