I'm stumped! Thanks for your patience with me on this so far...So I tried soldering on to the points outlined above on the headphone jack area and still get a ringing. This is what I have tried so far:

- headphones only = sound
- speaker only = squeal (with multiple speakers)
- headphones & speaker installed = squeal (with multiple speakers)
- speaker soldered on socket = squeal/ringing that reduces when I touch the pi. but no game sounds

Am I missing anything?

The speaker should have sound if the headphone was having sound output. Did you try to wire it as you have in the image with the headphone soldered on?

The way you have it wires the sound from the chip is going directly to the speaker so it should work.

Huzzah!!! It worked! Piggybacking wires onto the headphone jack points did the job!

I went into this project with less practice that I should've, but now I'm so much more confident in my soldering skills and am definitely ready to take on another project. Thanks for all your support and patience through all this!
