Hi! I have ordered the parts to build my GB Zero but I couldn't find any faulty GBs (there was one, part of a mix of 5 different consoles including a DS for £50). I'm now wondering if I can use a GB Advance card reader instead. If I can play original Gameboy games in an advance can't I just use that reader? Has anyone tried this?
Thanks,
Mark
GB Advance Cartridge Reader
Re: GB Advance Cartridge Reader
The reader itself will work, would just be connecting the pins accordingly. People use the original gb reader because it fits. I don't know if the gba reader would fit and how the cartridge would fit. Plus there's no cool pcbs for it like there is for the original gb reader.
You should be able to find a broken gb, I've already bought 3 on ebay. But if you absolutely cannot, and you find the gba reader won't work either, you could always just get a sd card breakout board and attach it to the inner lip of the reader so the card is exposed.
Or honestly for the next one I'm making for a friend, since I already have all the roms loaded and ready that you could possibly need, I just may leave the sd in the Pi inside the gbz and not even worry about a reader. Then just have a custom sticker made and pop it on an old game and leave it in the gbz for looks.
Hope this helps.

I second this statement. I used one in my build and was successful.Ganreizu wrote:The nintendo DS's gameboy cartridge reader is confirmed to fit i believe.

Re: GB Advance Cartridge Reader
The DS reader was narrowed at the back so that GB carts wouldn't fit as they ran at 5v instead of the 3.3v the GBA carts used. You just need to remove some plastic at the back of the reader where the corners turn in before the edge of your cart
