Need some thoughts!

Post by 3y3c0ugh » Sat May 14, 2016 2:03 pm

Hi all,
I've recently found a local store that had pi0's in a starter pack for $20 and picked one up. I finally wired everything together (very stupidly) without testing all my connections out. However, I did test the NiceShopping screen (blue board) with the MicroUSB breakout, which was running off around 5.25v (Edit: It worked perfect off the 5.25v). However, when I power my gameboy and test the voltage going to my screen, it's only getting around 4.88v. Mind you my screen is actually wired into the Powerboost and not the Pi or Power Breakout board. I even tried plugging the MicroUSB charging cable to see if that would boost the power enough, but the same voltage came across.

At first I definitely thought it was the SD card, but the screen still doesn't power after I plugged the SD card directly into the Pi0. (Which I've come to notice doesn't turn on when I use the cartridge and the reader, but directly plugged in I see all the green lights on the pi0 light up.)

Note: The screen will flash very quickly about 10sec after I flip the power on like it wants to turn on. I'm currently at work writing this post and won't be able to test anything for another 4 hours. I have a variable voltage DC jack I may wire to the screen and see if the voltage, or screen connections are the issue.

Here is an image of my completed and non-working GBZ!:

Do you guys see anything I could have accidentally wired backwards? Or do you guys have any thoughts on solutions I should try?

I got the Niceshopping screen from Amazon and I saw the same flickering behavior when hooking it up to 5v. I had to go up to 6v to get the screen to be stable. :( Do you have a 6V+ power supply handy? You could also hook up 4 AA batteries in series and use that to test.

This gadget should be able to boost your 5V up to 6V or more: http://www.amazon.com/Yeeco-Converter-R ... B011EBSKK0

@3y3c0ugh

Probably too late now if I ask you to take a pic of your PowerBoost 1000C connections as I can see it's mounted and covered with tape already.

Anyways...
- Which solder points did you connect your screen and your Pi0?
- Are you sure you're connected to the "boosted" 5v solder points and not the one that is connected to the battery or USB input?

Look at my Powerboost connection in the pic below. Did you solder on the same solder points as I have?

With these connections, I have no issues running both the Pi2 (which sucks more power compared to the Pi0) and the Niceshopping screen from a single 2500mah lipo. See this pic below of my setup and notice there's no USB power plugged in -- only the lipo -- and the screen isn't flickering.

Just a thought... Can you temporarily disconnect the USB hub from the Pi0 and see if that's what's causing the flicker? If I'm not mistaken, you're also using the "octopus" hub that I used before and it seems the reviews are correct that this hub isn't reliable. I changed to another variant of this hub and I haven't experienced the flicker (and restarts  ) since then.

@Chiz Thanks for the ideas to try, I happen to try the same ones when I got off work and had everything working correctly :). I am using the "octopus" USB hub, and had it wired BACKWARDS.... which was in turn wired to my power breakout backwards. So, I bought two octopus' and tried the second one (i also cut part of the first to make it smaller) and it worked perfect. My screen power, and everything works as it should.

Very pleased with how it all turned out!! Here is a final image:

Interesting to know that it was the USB hub causing the issue, thanks for updating on your progress! :)
