Metal bracket inside case

SIlly question, but does the metal bracket that's on the backside of the case need to stay in there? Is the only purpose it serves to protect the cartridge from the gameboy board, or does removing it cause problems with the screws?

I keep it to use it as support: but I cover it with kapton tape before.
