Audio card, GB case height, jack slot

Post by Renalti » Sat Jul 22, 2017 6:06 pm

Hi there!

I am following a (french) tutorial I found, and I'd like to improve the components a bit. Here is the part about audio:

I'd like to replace the (weak) CM108 sound card with a stronger one (maybe the PCM2706, if this model is compatible, or another one that you might suggest).

I'd also like to put strong 5W stereo speakers, but the smallest model I found is 28mm high, and I'm afraid it won't fit on each side of the GB case, especially because of the rounded corners (disclaimer: I am currently looking for the best components, and I do not own a GB case yet, I only know the case is 32mm height total... but I do not know the available room inside).

Could someone owning a GB case tell me the max height for the speakers? I saw in the wiki that you suggest 20mm speakers, does it mean that 21mm (for example) speakers won't fit? Also, isn't 0.5W a bit low? I have absolutely no idea, but I'd like to have the best and clearest possible sound, even if it's a bit more expensive (I won't be building dozens of GBZs, that's why I would like to have great hardware... also I'm so sad that the NanoPi Neo Plus2 is not supported  ).

If 5W won't fit in height or if it's too much watts, then I won't need the PAM8406 I was thinking about. Also, someone advised me to get the PAM8803 (3W), and somewhere else I read about the TS2012 (3W as well). But I can't seem to find proper comparisons.

Last thing, I'll use the Zero W version so that I have built-in Wifi and Bluetooth, which will allow me to pair a bluetooth headset. One question though: I'd like, if it's possible, to still be able to use a jack-powered headset. Is it possible to solder the jack slot directly onto the audio boost card? If I do so, how will the card know when to switch to jack and "disable" the stereo speakers? Maybe it's a stupid question and this is a basic audio card feature... But I'm not ashamed to be a noob willing to learn things! ;)

Thank you all for any help!

Best regards,

Renalti

Sorry I made a mistake about having read the mintyPi wiki: I did read it, however it (indeed) speaks about the minty case, not the DMG case, and probably the minty case is smaller (in height) compared to the DMG case, hence the 20mm.

Still, my biggest concern for now (because I need to order everything that is in my cart and then wait for 40 days) is: will these 28mm wide 5W speakers fit on each size of the DMG case? (28x40mm)

If not, what do you suggest, to get a clear+nice (+loud if necessary) sound? I'll get this audio amp, and as for the USB audio card, I still need to look further into it.

If anyone owning a DMG case could please just take the inner measurement (which I can't seem to find), it would be of tremendous help! :)

There will be plenty of time later to discuss my other questions

Thank you a lot!

Salut ! Je suis français aussi

Je vais répondre en anglais pour permettre à tout le monde d'en profiter...

If you are planning to butcher the shell, then you can go with the 28x40... on the back half, you have almost 15mm if you take out the battery case, and on the front half, you'll gain an additional 12mm... but, as this is sticky, you may still need to grind the front and back halves to gain the missing millimeter.

I would suggest you a smaller speaker.
I took a digital caliper and made some calculations, without touching the shell, you have only room for a 8mm high speaker !

Hope this helps ;)

Wooooops... sorry ! I thought you were talking of 28mm high and 40mm diameter round speaker

You need to know the height of this one but it seems ok.
If you grind some plastic from the speaker itself, (up and down, you can cancel about 6/7mms) it will be good in all 3 dimensions. (But still you will need to butcher the shell as the original speaker is 28mm round, 7mm high)

Hey Yaya !

Merci d'avoir écrit en anglais, et salutations à un ami FR ! :)
Thank you for having written in english, and greetings to a fellow French lad! :)

Thank you a lot for this detailed reply, I was beginning to think that no one here had a DMG shell :) but then I thought that if everyone's build was complete, then it would be impossible for them to check the inside measurements.

Anyway, what I was actually thinking was to put the speakers *along* the side of the shell, that's why the 28mm width of the speaker was important (and thickness not that much), since the DMG total height is only 32mm... plus the borders are rounded!

I don't (at least for now) plan to place the speakers toward the front (or back) of the shell, because I plan to use li-po batteries, that are generally thicker than li-ion ones (but therefore allow for higher capacities!), and I fear that the room along the Z axis will be scarce.

Maybe all of this will change though, because I thought about all the components without any experience or practice or whatever (even without owning a shell for checking measurements), and I may have surprises...

In any case, I already checked out my cart on AliE. yesterday. Dice are cast! :) but it cost me a lot of money, because I also devised backup plans... I should get my hands on enough stuff to craft two GBZ (if everything works fine)

And I also went postal and bought myself a nice Tarantula 3D printer, so that I can print a wood shell (I would still have to buy an industrial "extruder" or "cutter" or I don't know the word, to craft nice copper/brass buttons like that guy did in his effin awesome video!! Worst case, I create molds out of 3D printed stuff, and fill these molds with brass+resin, if it's possible)

Thank you again for taking the time to answer me Yaya! Much appreciated :)

Wohohoh ! Your project is insane lol !
You can put the speakers along the case, with minimal grinding on both front and back halves and the contour of the speakers, you ccan fit them.

As for lipo, this is a great idea !

Which board are you planning to use for support to all the stuffs ? Helder's ? Kite's ?

We could exchange a lot as i've started my build 2 days ago.

I'm still waiting most of the parts and among them, Kite's SAIO !

I'll open up a post to share with everyone !

I'm already designing a lot of 3d printed parts to be able to fit everything in my build with zero glue

But i don't have a printer so i'm just experimenting with 3DHubs... it is a long process.

Hahaha I don't understand a word of what you're saying about Helder Kite and whatnot, "I'm too noob for this sh*t" :) :)

Seriously, what are you talking about? I personally followed a french tutorial (youtube) and bought the stuff based on what I saw. Power supply, power booster, battery, potentiometer + sound card + audio amp + speaker, usb hub and of course a screen. I think that's about it. (Of course buttons, and plastic shells).

It's great that you are designing your own parts!! Impressive!! You should really watch that guy video I posted in my previous message, he is a genius! :)

I don't think I'll be able to start before late august though, because of shipping (from china)...

Btw do you know if RetroPie plans to support the NanoPi Neo Plus2 ? It'd be a great technology leap from the RPi Zero......

You should check this...

http://market.sudomod.com/kites-super-all-in-one-board/

And this

http://market.sudomod.com/gbz-all-in-one-pcb/

Those boards are embedded with almost everything you need to make a GBZ with a DMG.

I've watched the video... this guy is not human lol.
If only i had half of his tools, i would go the same way as he did... designing my whole stuff and drill, CNC everything to have my unique design :D

Anyway, don't worry about aliexperess, depending on the shops, you should get all the stuff within 10/15 days. I was impressed by the shipping time. They said about 40 days just to be cautious but it's really fast !

I've never heard about nanopi until you talk about it. I've took a quick look. Sounds really great but i warn you about the fact that this forum is almost all about pi zero and you could get into troubles to set up a nanopi because of a lack of documentation from people here.

I advise you to stay tuned with raspberry as you will find all your needs on this forum ;)

Yeah don't worry, my plan is to use a RPi Zero :)
However, I wouldn't mind buying a couple of these Neo+2 just for tinkering about... Maybe try to setup a Plex Media Player, if the specs allow it. Well, I'll see ^^

I'll have a look at your links when I get home :)
