Help me on this one! Parts for a gameboy zero/3b build!

Post by Hugomartins11 » Thu Jan 10, 2019 5:09 am

Hello!
I am currently starting to plan a build for a gameboy zero/gameboy pi 3b on a budget :P
I have both the Pi's right now, and I'd actually like to try with both of them.
I have several questions, since I'm a newbie :P
Do you guys think this screen will work? https://www.banggood.com/35-inch-TFT-LC ... rehouse=CN
It's pretty cheap, draws power from GPIO, and I can probably solder it directly to the GPIO pins on the pi, so, no need for a controller board.
Also, those TFT 3.5 screens that everyone is using from amazon are way expensiver in my local amazon, since I'm from Portugal.

I'm looking at this board on aliexpress (there are several, not sure if this is the best) : https://es.aliexpress.com/store/product ... st=ae803_4

Will it work?

Do I need a Teensy to do the forwarding for the controllers? As I understand that's what it is made for...
Can I use a arduino Nano/micro instead of a teensy? I heard they can do keyboard forwarding (not sure if that's the name :P) as well.
What do I need to do for the audio parts? I'd like to keep an audio jack...

I am thinking of stripping the USB connectors off of the raspberry pi 3B, so it will be thiner and will probably be better to fit in (?), and just solder 1 usb port for external input!
Tell me If i'm in the right direction! If not, point me :P

if you use the standard driver for that screen, your not going to get decent performance out of it.....

however you may be able to get it working good if you use this method to enable it....
(i personally havent tried it, so you'll have to do your own research on that)

https://github.com/juj/fbcp-ili9341

this would be a far better option/solution for you...
its a tried and tested screen, which doesnt require any further modification and will work straight out the box without the need to install drivers that may or may not work
(just connect a cable to your RPi and your good to go)

(trying to save $10 on something, can some times lead to you spending more in the long run)

if you going to come to a community and ask for assistance or advice....
the DECENT thing would be to support that community and the products that it ORIGINALLY came up with...
instead of going for the clones/copies out there

https://sudomod.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=4811

(even if they might be a couple of $ cheaper)

for controls you have a couple of options...
(or maybe just one dependng on the type of screen you use, or the amount of GPIO available)

USB Controls

https://sudomod.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=5427

GPIO Controls

https://learn.adafruit.com/retro-gaming ... s-software

(personally, I prefer GPIO controls... you get very little to NO lag at all... and they also don't require the use of 5V USB power)

I would recommend to avoid using the RPi 3B....
espcially as the RPi 3A+ is now available...
it has a smaller form factor, performance is pretty much there abouts as the 3B....
and most importantly... you dont have to strip down as much, or cut the board in any way

https://thepihut.com/products/raspberry ... rUQAvD_BwE

but if do want to have a go at stripping down the RPi 3B....
then have a look at this, it may be of some help...

https://sudomod.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=3608

And something that you haven't even asked about....
Which is very vital if you plan on using anything like a RPi 3B/A+....

is which power supply to use....
as most will not be able to give you sufficient power for the whole build
(without flashing the lightning bolt, advising you that the system is under powered)

consider this if planning on building with a Raspberry Pi 3.....

Hey! Thanks for the reply!

(Sorry for not doing quotations, still new to forums and idk how to do that xD)

So, I think that screen option is better, it's true! If it has been tested, and the difference is pretty low, I'm probably going for that! The only problem is: Only ships to the UK!
Is this the one every person on youtube uses? xD The one from amazon?
https://www.lightinthebox.com/pt/p/3-5- ... pAQAvD_BwE

About the board, I had no idea those were copies! I'm probably going for the one you recomended, the price is pretty much the same!
Something I came across on aliexpress was a board like this, but with an analog stick, headphone jack and everything, built in!
Is there anything like that made by someone from the forum? On a budget :P
[EDIT: I checked the website a little better and there are pretty good diagrams for wiring! No headphone built-in needed!]

The GPIO controls seem much easier and actually budget friendly xD I'm probably trying to do that as well!

I've already checked the raspberry pi 3a out, but since I have a 3B I wanted to give it a go xD But I'm probably going for the zero, since it's easier and better documented. I guess it's the best choice right now :P

What do you recommend for speakers, and etc? I understand I need one audio board or something like that, but I don't know anything about it...

GearBest deliver to pretty much anywhere in the world, especially nearly everywhere in Europe....

try this link, and select Portugal in the shipping options
(the previous link was from the UK site)

the other screen you linked, the backup camera LCD....
are a pointless purchase (IMHO)....
you don't know which variant of screen your gonna get....
or if it will require a modification or not to work on 5V...

there are few audio options....
PWM Audio
USB Sound Card
I2S Audio

do some research and see which suits your
budget
requirement/expectation
skill and ability

Yes that works just fine!

Just checked on one of your builds, I also have two old laptop speakers! Can I use those?
Also, can I use an old gameboy soundcard by any means? I have a damaged gameboy color and it won't work anyway, so I might as well do something with it.

Maybe I can even swap out more components?

i'm not sure if you know exactly what the RPi is capable of....
or what is compatible with it...

this is why I suggested for you to do research into these Audio options...

PWM Audio
USB Sound Card
I2S Audio

the only component that may be usable would be the

Headphone Socket
Volume Wheel

But these are so cheap, that it would be better to just buy new ones....

(maybe just spend some time looking at other peoples builds, and see what they've used)
