It does work while charging the battery, but I don't recommend it as it gets pretty hot then.

I got one from eBay, and I can charge an play, with no heat.

I found too a battery level indicator like this. You can replace the four leds by a tricolor one, because all cathod are linked.

Then you ave to add a switch Double Pole Single Throw to cut PI supply and battery indicator at same time.

All of this cost less than 10€ ! (shipping included)
