PiBoy DMG by ExperimentalPi

Post by WoWin » Sun Jul 26, 2020 6:58 pm

Hi guys,

I wanted to know if anyone has thoughts about the PiBoy DMG by ExperimentalPi?

The 640x480 screen and option to use Raspberry Pi 4 are really tempting. Also the price is very good compared to buying all the components and an AIO board. The only thing turning me off is the Micro USB power plug.

I built two Game Boys so far, one with Pi Zero and one with Pi 3B+ compute module (both had 320x240 screens). This seems like a really nice upgrade from them.

I am wondering how much the battery life will suffer with a Pi 4 and 4500 mAh battery.

I ordered one a while ago, what's your problem with the microusb power plug? I have a stupid amount of devices I use daily and aside from my mouse they all use USB C but I don't see it as a big deal, I'll probably either modify it or carry an adapter.

Plus it'll make it easier to add wireless charging anyways.

I wonder, can you modify its battery to a larger mAh? What if between 7,000 to 10,000mAh? I'm not that knowledgeable in those technical procedures so sorry if I came up as noob. Thanks!

I got my Pi Boy DMG unit and wanted to post my thoughts here:
The good:
  • Performance (with a Pi4) is excellent as expected
  • The 640x480 screen is very nice. It's feasible to use nice looking shaders for Gameboy or CRT.
  • Build quality is decent
The bad:
  • The thing is heavy. It's heavier (with a Pi4) than both my Circuit Sword and Gameboy Zero. In comparison the Gameboy Zero feels extremely light.
  • The cooling solution is loud and it doesn't like if the Gameboy is rotated (at least on my unit). If I turn my Gameboy around I can hear the fan hitting some other things.

I would be interested to know what is used for the gamepad driver and the battery manager if you know?

This is a picture of the board. The battery plugs into the black plug and the Atmel microcontroller is supposedly for the gamepad. Another thing I noticed is that it uses PWM audio. In my opinion one can hear that the audio sounds less clean than from USB audio.
