Would there be much Wi-Fi Drain?

Post by WoodMill » Fri Sep 23, 2016 8:31 am

Got all the stuff needed to make my Gameboy Zero. Will try to do a big push this weekend to finish it.

One thing I keep going back and forth on is Wi-Fi. If I hard-wire wifi into it, does it cause any significant drain when not in use?

My thought was to just leave it out because once I set up the GBZ, I most likely won't use WiFi except for the occasional updates to games or whatnot. But if I use a usb wifi drive, I'm more likely to lose it. But if I disconnect wifi within the software, and it doesn't affect drain, I'd be more willing to leave it in.

What have you guys done, and why? Hardwired in? Or just plug it in when needed?

Get a dedicated bag or a case. Put GBZ plus cables/hubs/usb devices/micro SD cards and stick them in there. That's what i'm doing.

It's going to have drain while connected yeah, and it's useful for a small amount of time. If you integrate it you're just going to end up with less play time in situations like playing in a forest or on a plane.

You could also add a switch to the live power cable in the usb cable to the WiFi dongle, so you can turn the WiFi off and on and have it in the battery compartment.

That'd be a good idea. Will see what kind of room I have in the battery compartment when I start putting it together.

I can't find the photo, but I'd seen someone set up an internal USB port to plug the WiFi in to and they added a second port glued inside the case but not connected to anything. Of course this meant that they could store the WiFi dongle in the case without loosing it and could easily plug it in when needed.

Good idea too. And I forgot that I have a travel Logitech mouse that does that very same thing too. There's a spot to put the receiver next to the batteries.
