Thats odd. When i scroll down the list of games, it takes about 3 seconds for the video to load. The box art turns up right away. I even when and shrank down my mp4 videos (save me a ton of space as well), but still takes those 3 seconds to load. I also over clocked my pi zero to 1090mhz with same results.
I also read somewhere that you have more troubles with your system according to delay lag e.t.c
Maybe your problem sits somewhere else. you can shrink down the mp4 size, but it's more important to shrink it down to 320x240 (for example) instead of 640x480.. try to download mp4 cutter or something, when you save the file you can select the resolution also, i remember that i had some similar problem, after i saved the vid to 320x240 it dropped half in size format, and after that the boot video worked smooth, but again, i don't think the theme itself is the cause of your delay and lag..
anyway, i am curious how we could solve your trouble. maybe you can give some more info in that other topic you posted, or try a new installation or something. Theme's working great never had troubles, and all tested pi's where standard and not overclocked. You can change the transistion style of the theme when you press start menu in retropie. Thanks in advance.

You could also try to enable OMX Player (not 100% sure it's an option on a Zero), and tweak the memory usage settings on the Retropie Start menu.

I primarily use the sselph videos from his scraper (and a few of the non-HD ones from EmuMovies i.e. for GBA, which the scraper doesn't pull yet).

The only lag I see are with the videos. Ive already chopped them down to 320x240 with an average 70% file size cut. Even in screen saver mode, the videos take 3 seconds to play. Fortunately, the videos play flawlessly. Ill try a new image.

I use the omx player and I slao use sselph videos and I put the vram up to 200mb. Same result. Its not a big deal because the rest of the system works great.

The file size should not be the issue but maybe the power needed to decode and cache the video instead. Did you monitor the CPU load and the memory load while trying to launch video previews ?

Maybe the GPI displays eat up CPU clock cycles that are normally used for video playback? I dunno. I actually have an older Class 6 SD card in my Pi3, and the video is snappy -- but it's just outputting video over HDMI.

Did you try another pi zero ? (let us know after you tried a new image) If a new image doesn't do the job, try a different pi zero..
I like to know what's the fault, since i never heard or saw someone else having these issues !
Good luck

I just tried it on a completely new image, different pi zero, carbon theme through an hdmi lcd and the delay is still there.

Hmmmm... so it might be an issue with the video file itself.
Try to a raw file instead of compressed, just to see if it helps

Edit : or the SD itself

I tried both dark and light version but text are a little rugged and some red/yellow color on the edges. Im using it on a screen in 24bit or 18bit DPI mode.
