another "can this be transformed to 5v" thread

Post by SP00N- » Mon Nov 14, 2016 8:18 am

Hi Guys,

I finally ordered the stuff I needed for the game boy zero only to find my screen to be totally different than the screens found on the wiki. :(
Can anybody help me (or explain to me how) with finding out if this screen is also able to run on 5v?
It looks from the outside the same as the amazon screens.
But to be precise it's this one

The circuit board looks like this.

You can do what I did:

clip off the yellow wire and solder it to a composite input, hook up your 5v out from the powerboost and ground and see if it displays an image. Make sure you use a good usb charger though, first time I tried with a lower quality one and it didn't power the display; I spent an hour trying to diagnose the problem before I swapped out for a good 1A one.

Also, doesn't hurt to look on the back of the board for labels; the display board on mine said it takes up to 24v (supposedly).

Please provide the numbers on the top of those two 8-pin ICs, one is usually the regulator that can be removed or bypassed.

Edit: You can also just try running from 5V and see how it works.

Ran it from 12 v but only got flickering.
Then found a different spot on the backside which said 3.3.v
Now it's broken. But on the plus side, I cracked the screen so even when it did work I had to buy a new one. :(

Alright. Which is the best so far?

I bought one from she-love on Amazon. Took 5v no mods needed. If you want I can give you more info when I get home.

Yea, running 5v to a 3.3 line is a good way to let out the blue smoke.

Check the wiki there's a couple of Amazon vendors there, just understand that purchasing from them doesn't guarantee you'll get that screen. That's what that page of the wiki is for :P

she-love seems to be the vendor of choice, you should get one of the already well-documented screens from him/her.

Thanks all.
Feeling stupid about the smoke but it was a lesson learned (i hope).
This sort of screens will not work right? Because of the gpio pins?
(it has nice specs though)

It will work, but the refresh rate will be on the low side......this board is also 8.7 cm wide....so it will not fit a gameboy housing.

You also need to do some tweeking to get the screen to work with the GPIO pins, instead of the composite signal running out of the box.

I have that display, it's DPI not SPI like most so it'll have the best framerate around. Problem is that it's too large to fit inside a DMG case.

I've got some photos over in my original build thread, but i'll post them here too:

Did anyone ever figure out how to modify this board for 5 volts?

The flickering is driving me nuts.
