Hi guys, I need some seasoned advice. Whilst I'm waiting to be able to build my pi gameboy i'd like to use the time to setup RetroPi and do all the rom files scraping etc in advance. What I'm not sure about is, if it's not yet housed with all the rest of the hardware, is it still possible to set up in advance with just the sdcard in the pi, but maybe connected to a computer monitor in the meantime. Would this screw up settings, or is this something that can be adjusted later

p.s. I wasn't sure if this post was strictly a RetroPi issue, or a PiZero issue. So if this is in the wrong place, mods please feel free to shift it.

Yea totally doable.
Just do it as u described.
You may just need to adjust your cfg and remap controls later on
