Targus broke 3 times?!

Hi,
When I tried to wire up the Targus Usb-Hub the first time, I accidentally connected the black wire from my ground to the blue wire on the Targus. Moreover I cut off the 4th USB-port like it was shown. However, the thing seemed to be dead.
Thus, I bought a new one, I wired it up (unfortunately I switched the blue and the black wire again) but I didn't cut the 4th port, this time. Anyhow, it seemed to be dead again.
The third time, I modified NOTHING on the board (I do even still have the ports on it) and I wired the black to the black cable. Before that, I tested it on my computer and it worked. Then, I connected it to the Pi and it seemed to be dead AGAIN.
In desperation, I wired it up to my computer and it doesn't recognize any USB-device connected to it. My computer only recognizes the board itself, since the command lsusb (I'm using Linux) gives the following output for the hub:
Bus 001 Device 028: ID 05e3:0608 Genesys Logic, Inc. Hub
But neither a Keyboard nor a USB-Stick is recognized. Before I wired it up to the Pi it worked.
Have you made any experience with that type of problem?
I'd really appreciate your help!
Update: I tried it again this morning and it's not even listed in lsusb any more. Windows gives the error code 43 in device manager.
