USB ports

Post by Treguard » Thu Feb 09, 2017 8:59 am

Just a simple poll really. How many usb ports do you have or plan to put on your builds? If 1 will you just swap the mouse and keyboard as needed (assuming retropie recognises plug and play/swapping). Cheers!

I've built one with 2 ports, but that eats into the space in the battery compartment.

I prefer just the 1 port on the side of the GBZ. You can plug a USB hub into it if you really need more devices.

I have one USB port inside the case with an WiFi stick connected to it and one port accessable from the outside. I could have soldered the Wifi stick directly but now I can swap it out if it isn't working anymore or put something different into to port if I evre need to. I have found that it fits perfectly in the gap between the battery compartment and outershell.

Thanks for the replies and votes all. I did struggle to find a spot on the outside where i could put a 2nd port without eating into the battery compartment, so will be sticking with just the one :)

I have 4. Two physical ones still attached to the USB hub with wifi and bluetooth dongles on them, one goes to the teensey and the other outside the case. I like the stand alone bluetooth and wifi capability without a hub so if I want, I can just connect a bluetooth controller and go hdmi to my tv and just use the GBZ as a console. I had to forgo the cartridge reader though. I see no real need in getting to the sd card unless the image gets corrupted.

Really, one is probably good, but I prefer 2. My first GBZ has one, only because I damaged the hub and did not want to buy another, so I just extended the pi's mirco usb to a full size usb in the ext slot. My second GBZ used helders all in one with a built in hub, in that case I have 2, one is internal and has my wifi stick, then the other runs to the ext port for keyboard, the third port is left empty. I like to have one port dedicated to wifi, then can plug a keyboard in when needed with the second port.

The volume wheel for me doesn't fit on the side that WErmy has it strangely. I had to mount the volume wheel onto the back half of the case which now fits fine. I had to end up cutting a hole on the top of the case and have put the USB port there since it wouldn't fit in the hole where WErmy's was. It just seems to bump up against the capacitors on the controller board sadly.

I suppose I could possibly deepen the hole where the USB port should've gone...then I'd have two.

I can see how have wifi functionality would help a lot. Would certainly save having to open up the case in order to access the SD card.
