I did the 5v mod to the controllerboard as suggested. Then I hooked it up to the raspberry zero for a test drive. It starts, but have four white lines across the top of the screen. Have I messed up or is the screen broken? The screen is from Gearbest..

Hard to say without pictures showing your soldering and did the screen not have those lines before the mod? Was the screen tested before the mod?

I didn't test the screen befor unfortunately. Rookie mistake I guess

You connected both white and yellow wires?

You only need to connect 1, so or yellow, or white. The driver board has two input channels....being 1 white, one yellow.
Disconnect one from the pi (it is not connected at all), in your case I would disconnect the yellow wire.

Not sure if it will fix your problem......I would think the screen or the driver board has a problem.

Both the wires are connected. I'll gonna try desoldering one of the wires as soon as I get back from work. See if it makes any difference.

Was that mod in the wiki? Often it's been a wire going to the 8pin chip and not a Diode.

I had the same lines on my 5 inch display, except vertical, and I needed to add settings to the config file on boot.

Something like:

hdmi_group=2
hdmi_mode=1
hdmi_mode=87
hdmi_cvt 320 240 60 6 0 0 0

Found this on Amazon for BW screens:

framebuffer_width=320
framebuffer_height=240
overscan_top=-16
overscan_bottom=-32
overscan_left=0
overscan_right=-16
sdtv_mode=2

I tried desoldering the white and the yellow wire.

No yellow wire: same as before
No white: no picture at all
