USB to SD Adapter

Post by dug1967 » Thu Sep 28, 2017 8:46 pm

Looking through the Wiki for Kite's SAIO board in the Pi3 build section there is reference to adding a USB to SD adapter (picture here)

What is the purpose of doing this?

It allows you to transfer ROMs via a n SD card. You won't be able to start the Pi3 on it.

So it adds a secondary SD card slot to the device? Since the first one is taken up by the RetroPie SD card?

If you don't do this you just load ROM's to the RetroPie SD card, correct?

Also does anybody have a source for the adapter shown in Kite's picture?

My apologies for bringing up an old post, especially one I started, but.....

I never got around to building my GameBoy with Ver. 0.6 of Kite’s SAIO board and the Raspberry PI3, but am back on to it now.

I still don’t understand this USB to Micro SD adapter setup. By placing this adapter between the SAIO and the PI adapter board where does this provide the second micro SD card to?

I am totally lost on this setup :?

Anybody have explanatory words, pictures or schematics?

The Pi3 has it's own SD card, with NO BREAKOUTS ON THE PINS, so you have to use an SD in the Pi. The only other 'SD slot' is the one on the SAIO PCB, which is connected to that 8pin connector (NOT to the Pi3, because as stated there is no way to connect to the Pi3).. so by connecting a USB SD adapter to that connector, whatever you put into the SAIO SD slot will be read by the USB SD adapter :)

I ended up unsoldering it because it really isn't necessary.. a single SD on the Pi is more than enough!

Thanks for that Kite, I think I understand now....

Correct me if I am wrong....

Primary SD card would be the one on the RPi3 and this would be used to have the Linux / ES / RetroPie in it.

Secondary SD card would be the one on the SAIO board and this could be used to run additional ROM's in RetroPie since it is accessible with the case closed up. i.e. place new ROM's on another SD card and place in into the slot on the side of the case...

This secondary SD card is running through the USB adapter.

Is this right?

Did you gain anything by un-soldering it?

Correct.

By unsolder I meant that in that picture i didn't connect up the '3.3v' pin so that it isn't powered, as I didn't need it because primary SD is big enough, and wifi makes it easy.. it's just an option for use and an idea on how to implement. It worked perfectly but for me personally it's not needed.
