Is the PowerBoost 1000C enough for Pi3 projects?

Post by Sushi » Sun Dec 24, 2017 4:13 pm

I'm considering doing a CM3 build, but I'm considering using something other than a PowerBoost 1000C because of how much power it can provide (5W). The Pi under full load and the display combined use ~4.1W which leaves 0.9 for the arduino and audio. That seems kind of tight. Has anybody actually had a problem with the 1000C as far as power delivery is concerned? I've seen it used so often and never heard any complaints, so I assume it's a non-issue.

Try "PowerBoost 1000 basic"
I've used it for my project Pi3 + 4.3 hdmi screen
It's working without any powering issues

It looks like it can carry more current, but it doesn't act as a battery charger unfortunately. I guess I'll use a 1000C and upgrade if I run into issues.

The 1000C is the same board as the 1000 and has C for Charging. That’s all.
So if it works with 1000 it will with 1000C and the reverse applies too.
You’d better go for a 1000C if you are going to use batteries, this will avoid using an extra charging board

I went back just to be sure. The boost circuits are slightly different it seems. The basic has a TPS61030 with a 4A internal switch while the C has a TPS61090 and a 2A internal switch. However, from that, it seems the 1000C can actually provide up to 10W (even ~12.5 according to adafruit) instead of the 5 I assumed. I guess I had no reason to worry about it in the first place.

I think their page is just a little unclear. The 5W figure probably applies to the USB output and not the 5V dedicated output.
