Space saving inside the DMG case

Post by Kurai Kitsune » Mon May 09, 2016 12:57 pm

Hi all!

So I'm coming to the point where I reeeeeally want to finish this bad boy off. I have all the parts, most of it is wired up and in the case, but i'm running out of room...
I haven't even put in the power board or the battery yet, and I'm having trouble closing the damn DMG case up already.

I've tried to shorten wires here and there. I've also taken a hacksaw to the game boy cartridge reader so there's a good 6mm of space saved.

There is less space than I thought for the Teensy to lay on top of the screen driver board plus wires. Might try to reorganise those a bit.

The usb sound card is tucked away nicely at the bottom, and the TRRS jack breakout sat just on top of it isn't in the way much.

The usb hub is stripped down to just one port with the others wired directly to different components.

After trying to fit the Pi in there, I don't really have room for the power board and the battery... not to mention i can't even close the case properly :P

Possibly I can shave off more plastic around the screw holes, but didn't want to make them too weak.

How have you guys been able to solve space issues if you've had any?

The battery can go in the DMG battery compartment, the Audio out port could have been just the jack as the breakout board takes some room and it looks like the skewed position might interfere with other components.

Rest is pretty much cable management I think, I still don't have my DMG yet since I haven't been able to source a broken one for a decent price but it seems like I will need to do some planning before starting to assemble things.

Here I was thinking of using a chopped off USB snes controller but I'm not sure I will have the room now, might just use the GPIO and use the DMG board

Okaaay, i managed to close the case after some cable management. slot them into holes n all that. cool.
The power board and the battery will fit in somehow. i wanna secure the board in but need to wire it up first.
I don't have the required JST connector for the lipo battery, gotta wait on ebay.
for now imma work on puttin the screen shield in

Hey I'm very interested in your cable management! Can you show some more pictures of the placement of everything? I'm also having a hard time getting everything in, and this is before the Card Reader. Did you end up using a pot for volume control? I think since i'm using USB sound I'll also have to shave down to 1 port..

If I could be bothered, I'm sure I could add longer wires to properly route them around the edges of the case, but here's what I did so far.

In the below image the screen and the screen's driver board are the lowest things in the shell, but the driver board has some pretty tall components. I ended up placing the screen upside down so i had more room for the controller board. With that, the wires connected to the screen driver were coming out at the top of the case.

The teensy board sits on top of it in the lowest part, and the cables I've tried to keep also in the lower parts, going around the taller ones.

I tried to flatten all of the wires out as much as possible.

2nd image; the wires from the cartridge reader to the pi are VERY short. the pi just sits on top of it. When closing the 2 halves, the pi fits just below the teensy, I'm going to test it for heat dissipation, that is another worry.
