Display Similar to Analogue Pocket

Post by RxBrad » Wed Oct 16, 2019 2:50 pm

With today's Analogue Pocket announcement, I was curious which bonkers display they were using for that 1600x1440 3.5" LCD.

This might be it, but ends up costing $150 for the LCD & driver board. Then you have to figure out getting it hooked to a Pi.

While it doesn't appear to be identical, this 3.4" LCD looks close at $70. The aspect ratio also appears to be somewhere between 5:4 and a 1:1 square.

These small, square-ish LCDs seem to be a niche product for AR goggles. Wonder if that's a place we should look for potentially nicer LCDs than our typical 320x240s.

a bit on the pricey side, compared to other options, but that resolution is insane. i'd imagine the refresh rate has to be good too if it's supposed to be used in vr goggles. i wonder how well it would fit in a dmg case

The $70 3.4" LCD appears to actually be similar in size to the Gearbest 3.5" people use today.

If the specs I dug up are correct, the $70 AR LCD's entire screen panel is ~2.4mm narrower and ~3.64mm shorter than the Gearbest. You could probably get a lens for the 3.2" screens, and tweak the overscan and have it work fairly seamlessly.

Wisecoco 3.4":
Screen: W 74.6mm x H 60.36mm
Active Area [4 : 3.24 aspect]: W 66.3mm x W 56.16mm

ILI9341 3.2" LCD:
Screen: W 77.4mm x H 54mm
Active Area [4 : 3 aspect]: W 64.8mm (-1.5mm) x H 48.6mm (-7.56mm)

Gearbest 3.5":
Screen: W 77mm x H 64mm
Active Area [4 : 3.07 aspect]: W 69mm (+2.7mm) x H 53mm (-3.16mm)

how about that control board tho? looks like its bigger than the gearbest one.
It took some searching, but it appears to be 64 x 65mm. So, bigger than the Gearbest, but not outlandish. Looks like the ribbon cable goes for miles, so you may be able to mount it on the back half of the DMG shell.

Looks like the driver board is based on the Toshiba TC358870XBG chip.

EDIT: Found a datasheet of sorts, but it's not terribly informative.
