FYVE DreamGEAR Zero

Post by JohnnyFYVE » Sun Dec 04, 2016 10:17 am

So I found this on sale for $20 and instantly wondered if I could mod it...

It was tricky but I ended up being successful I suppose...

I ordered a 2.5 display from Adafruit which didn't need a 5v conversion(score)... And basically the exact components from Wermy's GB0 guide. Minus the USB Hub, Low Pass Filter(the audio is adjusted digitally so no crackling), the control PCB, and a few other things(3D printed pieces ect). I cut the middle out of the PCB the dreamGEAR came with and used just the left and right pieces for my controls... converted the vol - and + to X and Y buttons, still debating on if I want to add L and R buttons. Wired the controls to a Teensy LC and crammed everything else in there the best I could. I'm going to have to use small LiPo... That's where I'm at now, looking into a battery that will fit in the space I left in the back right side of the case. Looking into alternative options to Adafruit as it cost me 5x as much as the battery to have it shipped here... with customs basically randomly charging duty fees it's not worth it. So yeah looking at the options on eBay from China. Here's a look inside:

And when she's all closed up:

It works!

Still need to stick this faceplate back on but will wait until the battery is in there so I don't ruin the adhesive any more:

Fun build overall. Much cheaper than an aftermarket GB0 build as well... but tapping into a control PCB is hard I must say. Very delicate work.
Anyway I hope somebody finds this of interest. Let me know if you have any questions!

I post all my experiments on my Instagram(@f_y_v_e) if anyone is interested in following over there... Recently converted a busted Sega controller to USB. That's on there!

Great build! I want to try that build. What do I need to get to accomplish this build?

Find the shell somewhere... (I got mine on sale locally) It's called a "My Arcade 220 in 1" I think? Or "DreamGEAR 220 in 1" something like that. You will need a 2.5 inch display as well, I got mine from Adafruit:

https://www.adafruit.com/products/912

Then just these part Wermy uses in the Gameboy Zero Guide:

Teensy LC
Power Boost 1000c Battery Charger
Raspberry Pi Zero
Mono Audio Amplifier(from Adafruit)
and a Power Strip(you can make one if you prefer)

In this build you can see I'm using a different speaker... That's only because I damaged the speaker that comes with the DreamGEAR(whoops). So you should be good to go for a speaker but if you want a back up the speaker in this build is from the Gameboy Zero guide as well.

Of course the usual things like solder and wiring ect to complete the build.
