The SPI interface (Serial Peripheral Interface, basically a serial port that requires a software driver to emulate a hardware display) being used for PiTFT displays is slow and less configurable than a standard composite video (low resolution, but standardized and built-in on the board) and HDMI (high resolution, easily configurable, standardized).

This answer is probably partially wrong, but I'm using my own level of understanding to describe it. :)

Hi. I ordered the LCD's from aliexpress, which are taking to damn long to arrive, so no news yet.
I'll be using the pi zero in this build...
Also, i'm still searching for a safe shutdown method to it while waiting.

As for Using the AIO 2.0, after the powerboost maybe a safe shutdown switch?..

I'm going for the ones with no touchscreen, and with video controller pcb.

the ones that connect directly to the Pi's gpio will consume processing power from the pi, so i'll ignore them for now

Hello, Everyone!
I actually am in the process of tinkering with exactly one of these displays.
The only way i got it to work was with Kuman's custom raspbian, no retropie, no lakka....haven't tried other distros.
I can tell you once the the custome image is configured, it works OK. you can squeeze a few extra frames out of it my increasing the GPU mem split in raspi-config, and by editing config.txt with a speed=62000000 (nothing more, or you won't get a picture.

Still, i doubt it is playable. I can't say for sure, though, because i wasn't able to manually install any emulation packages after that :(.

Apologies if I hijacked the thread, but i figured I'd put in my 2Cs in case i can save someone else days of pain....

Still, tinkering continues...(that's the fun part, right?)

Well....At the point where I'm at, my answer would be no RetroPie on the tft, but yes to raspbian on the tft (given you use the correct driver).
I've found the easiest way is to use the mfg's img file, then increase a bit the mem split, and the speed setting in the config.txt to 62000000 (max i could get it to function with); that should give you around 33fps. Little better than the 20-22fps from mfg, but way too slow for gaming.

I'm attempting an alternate route with another img (Lakka), but so far i only got both tft and hdmi outputs to go dark lol.
Good thing i haven't fried the screen, yet!

Hi,

You have great plans, and i will surely take a look again in your project topic.
But usually it's alot better to gain some knowledge about all this in the first place, and after that gather al the necessary parts and work from there. not the other way around. anyway i wish you good luck and hope to see your finished project in the near future.
