My first build, SAIO, 3D Printed Shell

Post by reipet » Sun Feb 11, 2018 1:19 am

Hello all,

finally I can start my own first build.
I took the last several month to improve the 3D Model for the shell to be able to finish the build without using any glue.
The Shell will acomodate brass threat inserts for the usage of screws.

Features for this build:

- SAIO Board and Components
- Pogo Pin Battery
- 3D printed rear buttons with Silicon Pad Button
- No Glue but use of screws
- SD-Card inside Cartridge with Cartridge reader from GBA

Thanks to all the folks here that supported the development of this build and gave me design inputs/ideas and last but not least for creating the base 3D model of the shell to start with.

The SAIO Board with the Pi ZeroW is basically already ready and all components are tested so far.

Some details about the 3D printed shell:

- Printed in China
- Laser SLA
- Material DSM 8000, white
- Cost for all printed Components: 26EUR

Following some pictures of the printed parts.
This is the second print with some modifications. I have to say the first print came out better in some areas. For this print all the letters on the side surfaces are gone, not really visible but its acceptable to me.

Stay tuned for the next steps.

Awesome! The quality of the print is really good, especially considering the price! Would you mind sharing where you printed it?

Also: nice modification on the case with the guides for the mode button! I drowned mine in hot glue because I was so afraid it would come off.

The Company is called Wenext. www.wenext.cn.
No English Service though. They are specialized in rapid prototyping.
They are very quick, you send them the files and next day they send out the prints. Im residing in China so I will have them normally two days after sending out the files.

Big THX to you because your 3D Files have been the base for my modifications.

The Shell here still needs a little bit sanding but the precision is amazing, only some minor burrs and marks.

P.S. Let me know if you could open this webpage because I found out, out of China sometimes you cant open .cn webpages.

Thanks for the info!
The page seems to open fine - I cannot read it, not even with the help of google, but it opens.

I am glad to hear that the model has been of use to you! :) I am curious how your GBZ turns out!

Cool thing is all four buttons have that slight recess not just the original two... Advantages of a custom print

Next Steps completed.
So far everything fits in nicely.
The Head of the Screws for the screen bracket are flush with the bracket, so risk for here.

Pogo Battery is a bit a tight fit but normally not need to take out.

Looking good! I really like that you can work with screws a lot and don't have to hot glue everything down.

Hi all,

The Build is finished for the first step of it.
The Back Button solution works like a charm.

Strangely when I used the SD-Card I have setup and tested before it seems now booting very slow.
Also I can start any Game anymore and when I go to settings for example where we out of the GUI the Display stays black but seems function is there because I can still go back. When I shut down the System the screen displays the content shortly before switching of.
The Intro Video I have setup also not playing anymore.

It seems when connected to USB the battery is not being charged. How to check this?
The charging Light is always green.

Unfortunately I have no idea what's going on. :?
