Project Complete:

- I ended up changing a couple hardware items while completing this build.
- I switched to the standard bangood power supply while troubleshooting and it worked well so i left it in permanently.
- I replaced Camble's switch with a standard DPDT and added a tactile safe shutdown.
- I took the shotty looking heat shrink off of the HDMI cable and left it bare. Case closes easier and it actually looks a bit better too.
- Made some minor display adjustments to config file and HoolyHoo's awesome battery monitor script.

Everything's working great!

great to see the build completed, nice work.......

how is the heat from this build....
the Pi3 and Generic power supply kicks of some heat and so does the HDMI screen (how hot does this build get)....

also a little tip (a bit late now), if cambles safe shutdown board was hindering closing the shells together, or getting a flush close (which can happen)....
you can just place the board somewhere else and run cables to the switch (not ideal , but at least you have the on/off via the switch)

also what is a GBZ Handheld Edition....

Well, the heat is certainly apparent. The battery lasts about 3 hours, during which the build warms up for about 20 min and then levels off. I havent noticed any issue with function due to the heat and the case gets warm, but not hot. Makes a nice lil hand warmer if I decide to play outside on a cold day . I may explore a fan option at some point and I will be monitoring the core temp in the meantime. So far it seems like it should be ok and the battery compartment doesn't see this heat.

I removed camble's switch because it seems to be faulty. TBC, I do not know if it arrived that way or if tinkering caused the issue. When in use, it would cause extremely long boot times and lagging during splashscreen. Removed the switch and the problem went away. Installed the switch in my vanilla GBZ and found the problem remained, so I have set it in the used parts bin.

Closing the build was a problem on the first try, but I moved some things around slightly and it closed up easily.

The GBZ - Handheld Edition is a cool lil kickstarter project by 32teeth and moosepr. There have been multiple hardware revisions and the most recent is currently available on Tindie. I already have mine and have it about halfway assembled. I'm awaiting a 403060 battery and the switch may have been missed/lost(pretty cheap, so no big deal). I have another switch on order from ali that I'm waiting for.

Yea, works great too. The Atmega Leonardo had just enough pins for everything.

PF21, can you please show me the arduino Code with analog stick settings?
Nice build, I will show next days my Pi3 Build here of course.. :-)

I used Sota's code, found here

I did find that the raw code made the controls too sensitive to multiple button presses. This caused the menus to be very difficult to navigate. I added a delay(50) and it works great now. I'm sure that was a weak way to fix the problem but I'm new to Arduino coding and that was a quick/simple fix to get the controls usable.

Hope this helps. I would strongly recommend using sotas code. Some of the sudomod veterans even added some tweaks to make it more reliable and consistent.

I´ve this setup. Everthings running so far. But after 15 min of gaming (Mario cart N64) i´ve get an temp symbol top right in the screen.
So heat is a big problem. I´ve done some research of undervolting and underclocking the pi, but no success till yet...

Great looking build. Do you have a heatsink on the other side of the pi? That orientation would make it a lot easier to add a fan. I may try something similar if I build another one.

Also, was the battery cover latch able to fit without modification?

I've only ran the n64 emulator for about 15min straight. PSX for an hour+. I'll fire up the n64 and do a test this weekend.

no heatsink because it doesn´t help much... the hot air must out of the case, so a fan is necessary... under the Pi there an adafruit 1000c...
4000mah lipo... it fit´s without modifications :-) .
