Hey all. Figured it was about time to post up about my GBZ build.
So originally I was intent on building supergamegirls (https://imgur.com/a/gFhk7) gameboy/Pi project. I got quite a ways through that build but just wasn't happy with the quality of the 3d printed case so I basically started all over with a real Gameboy case and following wermy's excellent guide with a few small changes so far.
I had pretty much all the parts needed from the previous build so I got right to work once I found a broken gameboy on ebay.
Let's jump right to where I am now.
Screen installed and additional buttons installed. Original project used a Pi 3, so here's a size comparison between the Zero and 3
I decided to wire the control panel directly to the GPIO pins on the Pi Zero, skipping the teensy. I'd already configured this once before so it was pretty straight forward. Installing and setting up Retrogame to get everything working correctly wasn't that hard either.
I also skipped the metal bracket for the button stands. Someone else had this great idea and they are very sturdy in there. The screen I picked up off of amazon runs off 5v without any board hacking so that was nice. Oh, the connector I have between the set of wires came from the previous build, they were already the correct length so I just reused it.
First power on! Everything works. Control panel was configured inside RetroPie and all the buttons work.
So that's where I'm at currently. About to start on part 4 of the guide so hopefully I'll have some more updates soon!
Matt's GBZ Build
Re: Matt's GBZ Build
More work today!
Power switch/USB Charge Port/USB Port Speaker/Headphone Jack/Amp Realized the battery I had from the other project is way to big, so a quick trip to amazon and I'll have the correct one on thursday.
