Pocket Pi FE Kit build

Post by ekilla » Mon May 06, 2019 7:03 am

Hi,

just to show a completed build, here´s mine from last weekend. I could still slap me for ordering the wrong coloured buttons...
Had some issues with fitting the PCB and with finding out what the 3D printed parts where meant for or how to place them.
GGs build guide needs a little overhaul. Thanks KonnorJ and Bluup for helping me to figure out.
After cutting some more parts on the case everything fit. (Btw. for those who followed the pre order thread, my case does not look like cut on a CNC, at least not on the parts other than around the Screen opening).
I had to make the volume wheel opening and the one for the charging port a little bigger. Volume wheel opening because it scratched the wheel and the case couldn´t be closed properly. And the charging port opening because I couldn´t get a Micro USB plugged in, because of the plugs plastic housing.

Besides of that, very easy to assamble, very little soldering needed.
You need additionally: of course some wires, double sided sticky tape for the screen lens and optional two little magnets for the dummy cartridge

I glued the Magnets in and put some kapton tape on it because I don´t want it to short Pins on the PI. They shouldn´t touch, but just in case.
I´ve put some kapton tape on the PI to. And a little heat sink.

I´m going to add JST connectors later too, at least for the battery. But maybe for the shoulder button board too.
The battery was hard to get into the batter bay from the outside after closing up the case. Or you can have it inside while closing the case and push it up a little bit to screw in the two screws underneath it.

The screen lens could be a little bigger, I think this is due to the cases not beeing all the same. They are cheap ones but ok.
But you should tighten the case screws really not too much, just a little.

Looks like my eyes have been better in the past. For me my solder points looked good enough, but on the pictures now I see some on the cables that I should rework. Anyways, it works. Couldn´t get WiFi to connect for now, so still no roms on it to test sound and everything.

I did it a little different than it was meant with the magnet.
I glued it onto a little 3D part and directly to the shoulder board. The other one directly into the cartridge.

I actually like the purple snes style buttons (if I remember from another thread I read, you wanted the maroon dmg color correct?). Either way, looks good to me!

Thanks Rodocop.
I think that´s kind of what you grew up with.
Until a few years ago I didn´t even know the American SNES had these buttons.
I just can´t get used to it I think. Since I bought another Kit with European SNES Style buttons I think I will swap them out until I got the right ones somehow.

Nice job... Way to re-purpose that Anker bag, looks like it fits perfect!

Get a chance to try out the wireless charging yet?

You can buy the dmg buttons very cheap off Ali Xpress, £3 for two sets, though I agree the purple looks great

I think those buttons look great. Wish I went with that option instead of classic DMG

Thanks for the offer! I ordered a set from Jelly Belly Customs, and having them sent to Rich @ GG. He's going to throw them in with my kit(s).
