Battery Not Charging on Kite's Circuit Shield

After a couple of months using my Kite Retro Circuit Shield I have been unable to charge the battery. It was working perfectly fine up until now so I doubt I've soldered the polarity of the JST connector wrong. The LED indicators I've been getting were always a purple in the back middle and a green on the front top left. At times it's those colors but for long periods of time it's red in the back and nothing on the top left. When powered on I often get the "Wrench" icon on the battery. Is there a list of measures I could take to fix this and prevent this from happening? I'm not sure where to start.
