Saving a game with Kite's SAIO V1

Post by WoodMill » Tue Jul 25, 2017 7:28 am

I've been running into an issue where sometimes my games won't save. Seems that I can always load a game as soon as the rom starts. But I've had this random issue that I can't seem to figure out, where sometimes I can save a game, and sometimes it won't save and the system gets really bogged down. And instead of the message where it says something along the lines of "Save to game slot 01" or whatever, it looks like it says something like "Saving State: On."

But cannot do anything once that happens. I can continue playing the game, but is playing about 50% slower. I cannot load a game. I can still exit by hitting Select+Start.

Thoughts. WiFi is already off.

Odd, not seen this before.

Assume you're saving state via the button shortcut - out of interest what happens when you hit Select + X and manually save state via Retroarch, same thing?

EDIT: So i didn't actually fully read your post (whoops!) however it might be related.. Does it do this when you press SELECT + X and choose save state from the menu? Rather than the combo key?

MY ORIGINAL REPLY:
This is an emulationstation thing, by default it will ONLY save the memory when you SAFE EXIT the emulator (START + SELECT). If you just power the switch OFF it will just shutdown the system and that isn't a safe exit so therefore your memory is not saved.

You can change a setting to have it 'autosave' every 30 seconds, it is detailed here: https://github.com/RetroPie/RetroPie-Se ... g-properly

With other 'non safe shutdown builds' you never see this issue because you HAVE to exit the emulator in order to press start -> shutdown.. so can you try again but making sure you exit the emulator before shutting down? This should solve your issue
It happens when I hit Select + Right Trigger. Or R1 I guess. I've been saving like this on my other RetroPi setups, like my TV and other GBZ builds. I wasn't aware of the Start+Select save. How do you load those saves?

I'll try the Select + X way. I figured there wasn't anything too different. Just unclear why this is the only one that's done this. May have to start over again from scratch and slowly add back roms to see if I can figure it out. But it's not tied to any one emulator.

So I did some tests last night, and it's not as random as I thought. Well, it's not random at all. What was random was my choice of games and systems I was playing. It just felt random.

Using SELECT + R1 to save any SNES or NES game will bog down the system. Loading a game (SELECT + L1) is fine, as long as it's the first thing you do. After attempting to save a game, the only thing you can do is either continue playing at a really reduced framerate, or exit with START + SELECT. Can't load a game back up.

All other systems save and load and play perfectly fine. Select + X brings up the menu perfectly fine. But will bog down the system if Save is selected from there as well.

I have no idea. I tried selecting other emulators for the SNES, but none of them were any better.

Suppose I'll try a fresh install unless someone has some ideas. Googling came up with nothing of use.

Just realised I typed 'Select + Y' whoops. Meant X as Kite states.

This is how I always do it out of habit.

Ok. New update. It HAS to be a random issue. Must be a time thing maybe? In my previous testing, NES and SNES would fail right away. All others worked in my quick test. But last night I was playing a Genesis game for about a 1/2 hour and tried to save, and did the same thing. Wouldn't save and game grinded to a halt.

Saving from the Select + X menu does the same. Guess it's probably time to do a fresh install as it seems this may be an extremely rare case. Thanks guys for humoring me.

Dang. Completely FRESH install of Kites pre-built images. Used the first one here for the Zero build. https://github.com/geebles/Super-AIO/releases

I loaded a blank USB drive in so that it would populate the folders. I only loaded Zelda: A Link to the Past for SNES onto the drive. Loaded the game, went to save, and wham, would not save with the drop in framerate too.

What the heck can it be? USB obviously works. All the controls all registered fine. The sound works perfectly fine with the volume pot too. So I can't think it would be hardware related. It's a completely fresh install on a brand new 16GB SanDisk Micro SD card purposely bought for this, on a regular Non-wifi version of the Zero. Thoughts?

I guess you ahve tried changing ROMs already? I have had the same with some GBA games, unsolved until now. Select+R1 has helped for a few games though.

Using the same rom that I've been using for the past two years without any issues like this on both my TV RP3 and other GBZ builds.

This is my only build that's done this before.
