well, it depends on what you've put in your build and which power supply you're using...
some builds with everything including a Pi 3 AND the kitchen sink could easily draw 3A or more total. Minimal Pi 0 builds will be around 0.5A. lets assume your build is more typical and around 1A, 24AWG is good for up to around 3A (depending on a few factors) but I would stick to larger if there's even a chance of getting near 3A (even spikes)
(BTW I used this:
http://circuitcalculator.com/wordpress/ ... alculator/ with wires in bundle = 1 and wire length 3")

I work on Wii U build same time.
I have :
- 16A Protection Board Circuit
- Pololu 5V, 6A Step-Down
- Pololu Big Pushbutton
- 2Cells Single Lithium ion Battery Charger Module 1-2A
All this to make it work: 2 Battery (2x3500mAh 20A 3.7V) for my 6.5 screen and RPI3
26 or 24 AWG for this

?
Big thanks

Wire ampacity chart
For power wires, use 24 gauge wire or larger. 24 gauge is rated for 2.1A.
Signal wire can be much smaller.
