[Solved] Debugging BW Variant #8 Screen

Post by swm93 » Thu Oct 12, 2017 6:10 pm

I purchased a BW screen and ended up with BW variant #8. I moved the red cable according to the image on that page and hooked the screen up to a 5V power supply; however, the screen did not light up and does not appear to be working. I did a few minor tests to see if my new solder joints were good, but beyond that I'm not sure what else to try.

Here's a brief summary of what I have done.
Image
  1. Tested voltage between red circle (positive lead) and black circle (ground); found to be 5V.
  2. Tested voltage between blue circle and black circle (ground); found to be 3.3V.
This indicates to me that the screen is being powered correctly and the problem lies elsewhere. Any suggestions for other tests I could perform are greatly appreciated!

NOTE: When testing I did not connect the yellow or white wires to anything. I assumed that the screen would light up even if these wires were disconnected. Is this an incorrect assumption?

Did the screen work before the mod ? Did you test it to be sure it was working out of the box ?

No I didn't have any luck getting it to work before the mod either. When testing before the mod I also did not connect the yellow or white wire though. (Meant to put that in the original post... Thanks for bringing it up!)

Likely a faulty unit, but I'd like to spend a bit more time testing before ordering another one.

You need an input to make the screen work. Just powering those screens won’t switch it on...

Yup that did it, thanks! Didn't think it would be necessary to connect the input to see it light up.
