Sorry if this is a stupid question, but can i power my RPi Zero by jamming 5v into the 5v GPIO pin (pin 2 for example), or do i have to power it via the Micro usb port?

Yes you can. On the pi3 this would bypass the input protection circuit but the pi zero has no input protection so it is the same as powering through the micro usb.
