Mapping the d-pad for MAME using Kite's Circuit Sword

So I have finished my build and am enjoying the end results, although I can't stop finding all the things I would like to change.
My current hurdle is getting the d-pad to work on the MAME emulator. I am using Kite's CSO with 6 buttons on the front and 2 in the back. I was able to access the UI using tab through a keyboard and assigned the buttons, but when I press a direction on the d-pad it doesn't register. The d-pad is working on all other emulators. I have gone through all 3 threads (kite's) plus the wiki. I also haven't seen anything in the forums, which probably means I missed something basic. Any support would be greatly appreciated. I also want to thank everyone who has taken time to develop this community through products, resources, and information. It is greatly appreciated.
Update: After spending more time on Retropie forums, I figured out that it was an emulator issue. After shifting MAME roms from MAME4ALL to libreto -MAME2003 it all worked out.
